Frequently Asked Questions

1) Why are singlets optional?
a) It is your choice to join a tournament. Your wrestler may be the most comfortable in a singlet.  You give us a 50 dollar deposit check.  No checks are cashed unless you neglect to return it to us.

2. What gear do you truly need?
a) Honestly, clean shoes are required for the mats.  Wrestling shoes are more flexible than other shoes but not required.  Head gear is a good idea but again is a personal choice.

3. How many tournaments are there?
a) All tournaments are optional.  If your family is unsure – ask a coach.  They can suggest good tournaments for beginners.  They will offer advice on your wrestlers preparedness.

4. What will happen at a tournament?
a) You will pay an registration fee for your wrestler.  BRING your voucher slip and you can be reimbursed for this cost.  (up to $150/wrestler per year) Have a registration person sign the slip. There will be a cost for adults and other children.
b) Weigh in – they will check ask your wrestler to step on the scale in only their singlet.  No shoes, no warm ups.   This number will be used for pairing in the tournament.  Typically you are grouped by grade and weight, sometimes by experience as well.
c) What is a skin check?
i. The wrestler will step to a separate person.  They will spread arms,  with lowered straps of your singlet and turn around.  They are checking for rashes, open skin wounds, etc.
1) They will also check their nails.  Nails should not extend past their fingertips.

5. What does a team tournament mean?
a) A team tournament is similar to a high school meet.  There are predetermined weights that wrestle.  We have to have a wrestler for each weight.  Coaches determine who they need for the tournament and who is likely to experience success in their matches.
i. This is an awesome chance for wrestlers to get to watch their teammates versus all kids of the same age being on the mat at the same time.

6. Who are the coaches?
a) We are lucky enough to have many Dads who have wrestling experience.  Mike Lee heads up the practices typically for the younger grades.  We also have 3 coaches for the older grades – Luke Derksen, Jagger Hoffmann, and Anthony Mathiowetz.  Varsity head coach John Reiser and assistant coach Kevin Briggs are on the board and are part of the coaching committee.
